Workshop Summary

In this 4 day workshop, Kate teaches participants to use shape design, simplification, and abstraction when painting from life or from reference to create compelling paintings with gouache paints.

  • Day 1. Understanding your subject matter: gouache basics and an overview of value, composition, and color
  • Day 2. Learn to design and exaggerate through observation; Take a deep dive into the world of landscape painting
  • Day 3. Designing within chaos: painting complicated subject matter and making magic of a mess
  • Day 4. Alternative approaches, finding your voice, and final review

There is homework after Day 1, 2 & 3. Kate will critique your homework during the following class.

Upon completing this course, participants will come away with new techniques for shape design, composition, color and a better understanding of gouache as a medium. Participants will have completed a set of in class exercises and at least 10 gouache paintings.

Requirements

This beginner-to-intermediate-level workshop is geared towards any artist who has interest in strengthening their shape language, improving their approach to gouache painting, and needing a stylistic push.

Participants should fulfill these requirements:

  • Should have some basic traditional painting experience. Basic familiarity with color theories is recommended
  • Must prepare the required materials before our first class (Kate’s Material List will be shared upon registration)
  • Must be dedicated and do homework as required. Please know that this is a critique-heavy course. Every participant’s homework will be critiqued

Participants must have a Zoom account to participate in the live class (microphone is required, camera optional), must be able to access Google Drive to upload homework, and should be comfortable with using Discord to view/upload files and participate in text discussions.
