Course Description

During this course we will create three different portraits. There will be one photographic portrait, and three different options of composition. The first version of the portrait will be created in a realistic manner. The second version of the portrait will be created according to the principle of composition of the artist Vuillard. The third version of the portrait will be created on the basis of the primary image (photo) using the colors and principles of composition of a particular Vuillard painting.

During the lessons we will study the principles of composition and painting, color harmony and copying. During this 5-week course, students will complete a series of weekly exercises applying different ideas to a single portrait. Students are encouraged to draw together and ask questions during class activities, or they can watch and draw during their free time during the week. In-depth critique of student work will be provided through Padlet and through question and answer sessions during our class meetings.

Practice: Creating of compositional sketches based on the example of the certain portrait using a graphic editor. Homework at the end of each lesson and analysis of student work at the beginning of each lesson.
