Mark Daniel Nelson – 52 Art Rules and How to Break Them (Online)

Live Zoom Sessions: Wednesdays, 12:00-12:30 PM Pacific / 3:00-3:30 PM Eastern / 8:00-8:30 PM London*
Medium: All
Level: All

Join us every Wednesday starting January 10th, 2024, for an informative, inspiring live presentation examining 52 common “rules” artists will encounter at some point in their education.  Each presentation will be followed by Q&A.

Each week will focus on a different rule (“Don’t use black”, “Avoid centering”, “Only paint from life”, etc) and we will examine both sides of that week’s featured rule: First, why the rule exists and how to use it to improve your paintings; Second, how to breakthe rule to achieve compelling and unconventional results.

Each class session will end with a challenge prompt encouraging students to “pick a side” by using the rule or breaking it. Students with access to the optional Community Message Board will be able to share images on the class forum page and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each rule throughout the week and give and receive feedback with fellow students.

Each month will focus on a different theme/genre (landscape/still life/ figure/etc) and each week will have a cyclical theme:

Week 1: Giving yourself permission
Week 2: Composition and Design Strategies
Week 3: Finding Your Voice
Week 4: Wildcard Week: students will submit “rules” they have learned and would like to see challenged

Mark Daniel Nelson approaches both painting and teaching in much the same way: He strives to simplify and organize information until it reaches its most potent, elemental form. A student of both representational and non-objective painting, Nelson regularly fuses seemingly incongruous approaches to create new and unexpected results. “I strive for two things,” the artist states in his characteristically blunt manner, “impact and beauty. Eliminate the unnecessary parts and you’re left with much more powerful, beautiful modes of expression.” Mark Daniel Nelson is represented by Maxwell Alexander Gallery in Culver City, California, Gallery 1261 in Denver, CO and Jack Meier Gallery in Houston, TX. He has taught extensively in Art History, Human Anatomy, Drawing and Painting across the US.
