WHAT TOUCHES, WHAT HOLDS – Mariana Garibay Raeke & Manuela Riestra
Also opening next week, in the galleries’ main space, is our upcoming exhibition featuring the work of Mexico-born artists Mariana Garibay Raeke @mariana.garibay.raeke and Manuela Riestra @manuelariestra !
Conceived as a space of encounter that brings together two practices that approach making as a form of relation, attunement, and shared presence, WHAT TOUCHES, WHAT HOLDS serves as a meditation on the alternative modes of knowing that can unfold beyond dominant systems of representation and control. Working through the body and the object, Garibay Raeke and Riestra propose form as a vessel that holds sensation, memory, affect, and presence. Their practices move away from anthropocentric frameworks, instead enacting situated modes of sensibility that challenge hierarchical and extractive forms of knowledge.
If you’re in Mexico City, then make sure to come by for the opening, where Manuela Riestra and Mexican singer-songwriter Alaide @alaide___ will activate Riestra’s piece ‘Clementina’ through spoken word. Led into a trance via a ritual song written especially for this activation and inspired by the repetitive structure of the son jarocho, the music will craft the work’s first memory and the beginning of its new life. 🙌🏼🤍
WHAT TOUCHES, WHAT HOLDS opens to the public on Thursday, January 29th at AMBAR QUIJANO, Astrónomos 62-C, Escandón II, Mexico City at 6pm. Hope to see you next week, and remember, you can RSVP for the opening cocktail via the link in our bio.
