Workshop Summary

This 3-day workshop is a crash course about using color pencils as a sketching medium! Color pencil is the ideal sketching medium for its versatility and easy clean-up. Using still images of figure models, landscapes, and still life, we learn how to create painterly sketches using limited color palettes. We will block-in the shapes and spaces we observe as form emerges from flatness. By building the sketches with layers of transparent shapes with the color pencils, we can create complex and unusual mixtures of optical color.

  • Day 1. Intro to Color Pencil and Diadic Color Drawing (Still Life)
  • Day 2. Triadic Color Drawing (Landscape)
  • Day 3. Complex Palettes (Figure)

This workshop has a lot of in-class exercises where all participants draw together under Amy’s guidance. It’s very important that you participate in the live classes. There is homework after Day 1 & 2. Amy will critique your homework during the following class.

By attending the workshop, participants will receive several color chart hand-outs, and will leave with at least 10 of their own original color pencil sketches. Participants will gain an new understanding of color theory through their experiments with this medium. Participants will also have acquired a color drawing skill that can translate to other traditional sketching media such as ballpoint pen and marker.

Requirements

This all-level workshop is for artists who enjoy drawing, are interested in color theory, and need a faster and fun way to sketch in color!

Participants should fulfill these requirements:

  • Must prepare their own supplies following Amy’s material list (to be shared upon registration)
  • Should be comfortable participating in the in-class exercises, including printing the handouts ahead of time, taking photos of their sketches and uploading to Discord
