Following her 2021 solo presentation Consanguíneo in Mexico City, N.A.S.A.L. is pleased to present Brillo Solar, a new exhibition by Raura Oblitas (Lima, 1979).
Oblitas’ practice explores structures of educational rigidity, the legacies of political violence, and the influence of religion. She has exhibited widely across Peru, Mexico, and the United States, recently completed a residency at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Nebraska, and is currently pursuing a PhD in Arts at UNMSM in Lima.
” (…) Starting from the gallery’s own architecture and materiality, Raura constructs a spatial exercise centered on these forms, which can operate equally in defense or attack. The perceptual game is immediate. In earlier projects, she sought an indirect encounter with the elements she introduced; here, she connects us directly to the contained space. Upon crossing a threshold, we find ourselves inside the work—inside the secret passage. We become participants in an experience defined by tension, beginning with the act of stepping in and persisting through the physical difficulty of moving forward, as these constructions, the artist notes, are meant to exert pressure.
In this exhibition, the Lima-born sculptor reshapes the site through a cement block, two metal walls in dialogue, and two scale models projecting from the wall. Brillo Solar thus contains an oxymoron: these telluric environments are, in reality, worlds far removed from the light of any radiant sun.(…) “
