Ghis Thomas (née 1947, Oran, Algeria) is a French painter and printmaker based in Avignon. Since the early 1970s she has embraced non-figurative art, exploring materiality through bold compositions and rich textures. Her work is deeply informed by her journeys in West Africa and the Sahel, from which she sources pigments and draws visual inspiration. Known for her intense blacks, earthy ochres, and the use of asphalt-like media, Ghis’s paintings evoke a raw but elegant expressivity — balancing austerity and emotional force. Her work has been exhibited across Europe and Mexico, and is held in both public museums and private collections.
