The Dutch Atelier of Realist Art (DARA) is a private vocational art school in Haarlem founded upon the core mission of advancing the academic tradition in contemporary fine arts education. As a part of the growing “atelier movement,” DARA represents an institution of skill-based education in figurative drawing and painting, centred around our reverence towards classical methods and an aesthetic premised upon observation from nature.
The DARA studio is located in the west end of Haarlem, near the New Cathedral of St. Bavo and a short distance from the city centre. Haarlem has a rich artistic legacy, with many painters of the Dutch Golden Age migrating to Haarlem after the Fall of Antwerp, most notably Frans Hals. The city has served as a place of cultural importance for centuries, as home to the Netherlands’ oldest museum and a regular destination for artists on a pilgrimage to study from the masters of the Dutch Golden Age.
DARA was founded in 2018 by Dutch artist Thomas Langeveld and American artist Mischa Tranquilli, both of whom are classically trained painters and graduates of the Angel Academy of Art in Florence. What began as a quite modest endeavour of just five students working out of a small office room, DARA has slowly grown to include a team of dedicated staff and classically trained artist-instructors. We now regularly welcome approximately 100 students per trimester, and we are excited to realise an ambitious vision of what’s to come for the future.
The Dutch Atelier of Realist Art is a vocational school recognized by the Centraal Register Kort Beroepsonderwijs (CRKBO).
