The Art Students League was founded in 1875 by a group of art students who hoped to escape the Academy by founding a member-run art school designed for and run by independent artists. For nearly 150 years, the Art Students League has been a haven for countless artists, who use the freedom it affords them to explore diverse artistic practices, methodologies, and mediums while developing a mastery of traditional techniques.
NYAA New York Academy of Art
The New York Academy of Art is a graduate school that combines intensive technical training in the fine arts with active critical discourse. Academy students are taught traditional methods and techniques and encouraged to use these skills to make vital contemporary art. Grand Central Atelier
Grand Central Atelier (GCA) sprang from a group of visionary artists who gathered in Jacob Collins’ studio in the 1990’s. Collectively, these artists envisioned an aesthetic sensibility motivated by works from Michelangelo to Sargent. This inspired a method rooted in traditions pre-dating the 19th century and the advent of photography.
Whitney Museum of American Art
The Whitney is the only museum dedicated to American art and artists. Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney founded the Museum in 1930, taking a bold stand for American artists who were often overlooked. Today, our collection features works by over 4,000 artists, including luminaries like Edward Hopper, Georgia O’Keeffe, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Alexander Calder, and Faith Ringgold.
