El trabajo de Maru Aponte (Puerto Rico, 1996) surge a partir de su exploración de la acuarela, desafiando sus tradicionales e históricas asociaciones con el “arte menor” y las actividades de ocio. Sus pinturas y dibujos, realizados tanto en el estudio como al aire libre, investigan el color y la luz como fenómenos a través de los cuales examina y observa la naturaleza, redefiniendo el paisaje para evocar lugares, un fuerte sentido de pertenencia, o bien para comentar sobre su experiencia e identidad caribeña. Aponte se graduó recientemente con un MFA de la Universidad Emily Carr de Arte + Diseño en Vancouver. Anteriormente, asistió a la Escuela del Instituto de Arte de Chicago y se graduó del Departamento de Pintura de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Amberes, Bélgica. Aponte fue la residente de la Beca Emily Carr 2023 en Griffin Art Projects, North Vancouver, y actualmente es residente en la Escuela de Pintura y Escultura de Skowhegan.

The work of Maru Aponte (Puerto Rico, 1996) emerges through her exploration of watercolor, challenging its traditional and historical associations with “low art” and leisure. Her paintings and drawings, executed both in the studio and en plein air investigate color and light as phenomenons through which she examines and observes nature, while redefining landscape in order to evoke a strong sense of place, or comment on her Caribbean experience and identity. Aponte recently graduated with an MFA from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver. Previously, she attended the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and graduate from the Painting Department of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Aponte was the 2023 Emily Carr Fellowship Resident at Griffin Ar t Projects, North Vancouver and is a a current resident at the Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture.
