The stunning landmark building is home to\u00a0<strong>two magnificent stained\u2013glass domes<\/strong>, as well as\u00a0<strong>free music<\/strong>, dance and theater events, films, lectures,\u00a0<strong>art exhibitions<\/strong>\u00a0and family events.<\/p>\n<p>Completed in 1897 as Chicago\u2019s first central public library, the building was designed to impress and to prove that Chicago had grown into a sophisticated metropolis. The country\u2019s top architects and craftsmen used the most sumptuous materials, such as rare imported marbles, polished brass, fine hardwoods, and mosaics of Favrile glass, mother-of-pearl and colored stone, to create an architectural showplace. Located on the south side of the building, the world\u2019s largest stained glass\u00a0<strong>Tiffany dome<\/strong>\u00a0\u2015 38 feet in diameter with some 30,000 pieces of glass \u2015 was restored to its original splendor in 2008. On the north side of the building is a 40-foot-diameter dome with some 50,000 pieces of glass in an intricate Renaissance pattern, designed by\u00a0<strong>Healy &amp; Millet<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In 1991, the building was established as the Chicago Cultural Center by the<strong>\u00a0<a title=\"Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chicago.gov\/content\/city\/en\/depts\/dca.html\" target=\"_self\">Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs<\/a><\/strong>, the nation&#8217;s first and most comprehensive free municipal cultural venue.
