The year was 1977. New York City was raw and bursting with creativity. Punk was about to explode, graffiti covered the city\u2019s infrastructure, and the art stars of the next generation called downtown Manhattan home. Marcia Tucker, a curator working at the Whitney Museum of American Art, recognized the need for a new kind of museum that would elevate the voices of living artists whose work wasn\u2019t easily assimilated into the conventional structures of the day. When the New Museum was officially founded on January 1, 1977, we were the first institution devoted to contemporary art established in New York since World War II. Part traditional museum and part alternative space, we aspired to be a catalyst for broad dialogue between artists and the public by establishing a center for art made in the past decade. Our focus was living artists who did not yet have wide public exposure; our goal was to bring their work to a wider audience. Throughout the late 1970s and into the 1980s, we presented monographic exhibitions of emerging artists and group shows organized around important social and political issues. Our curators also began to place an increasing emphasis on areas other than the traditional media of painting and sculpture, presenting film, video, television, photography, and performance works as a regular part of the exhibition program.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
