The museum occupies a 15,300-square-metre-building (165,000\u00a0sq\u00a0ft) adjacent to\u00a0<a title=\"Robson Square\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robson_Square\">Robson Square<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0<a title=\"Downtown Vancouver\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Downtown_Vancouver\">downtown Vancouver<\/a>, making it the largest art museum in\u00a0<a title=\"Western Canada\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Western_Canada\">Western Canada<\/a>\u00a0by building size. Designed by\u00a0<a title=\"Francis Rattenbury\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Francis_Rattenbury\">Francis Rattenbury<\/a>, the building that the museum occupies was originally opened as a provincial courthouse, before it was re-purposed for museum use in the early 1980s. The building was designated the Former\u00a0<a title=\"Law Courts (Vancouver)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Law_Courts_(Vancouver)\">Vancouver Law Courts<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"National Historic Sites of Canada\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Historic_Sites_of_Canada\">National Historic Site of Canada<\/a>\u00a0in 1980.<\/p>\n<p>The museum first opened its doors to the public in 1931, housed within a structure crafted by the architectural firm Sharp and Johnston. In 1950, the museum underwent its initial expansion within this original building. Later, the institution embarked on a transition to the former provincial courthouse premises, with the relocation being completed in 1983. Subsequently, in the late 2000s and 2010s, the museum initiated plans for a further relocation to a new facility situated in\u00a0<a title=\"Larwill Park\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Larwill_Park\">Larwill Park<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Gallery&#8217;s permanent collection serves as a repository of art for the\u00a0<a title=\"Lower Mainland\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lower_Mainland\">Lower Mainland<\/a>\u00a0region, and has approximately 12,000 works by artists from Canada, and around the world.
