{"id":38659,"date":"2025-12-06T01:15:53","date_gmt":"2025-12-06T07:15:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/themesh.art\/?post_type=venues&#038;p=38659"},"modified":"2025-12-06T18:48:39","modified_gmt":"2025-12-07T00:48:39","slug":"national-gallery-of-canada","status":"publish","type":"venues","link":"https:\/\/themesh.art\/en\/venues\/national-gallery-of-canada\/","title":{"rendered":"National Gallery of Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0<b>National Gallery of Canada<\/b>\u00a0(<a title=\"French language\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/French_language\">French<\/a>:\u00a0<i lang=\"fr\">Mus\u00e9e des beaux-arts du Canada<\/i>), located in the capital city of\u00a0<a title=\"Ottawa\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ottawa\">Ottawa<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Ontario\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ontario\">Ontario<\/a>, is Canada&#8217;s\u00a0<a title=\"National museums of Canada\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_museums_of_Canada\">national<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Art museum\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Art_museum\">art museum<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Gallery_of_Canada#cite_note-8\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>8<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The museum&#8217;s building takes up 46,621 square metres (501,820\u00a0sq\u00a0ft), with 12,400 square metres (133,000\u00a0sq\u00a0ft) of space used for exhibiting art. It is one of the\u00a0<a title=\"List of largest art museums\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_largest_art_museums\">largest art museums<\/a>\u00a0in North America by exhibition space.<\/p>\n<p>The institution was established in 1880 at the\u00a0<a title=\"Second Supreme Court of Canada building\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Second_Supreme_Court_of_Canada_building\">Second Supreme Court of Canada building<\/a>, and moved to the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Victoria Memorial Museum\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Victoria_Memorial_Museum\">Victoria Memorial Museum<\/a>\u00a0building in 1911. In 1913, the\u00a0<a title=\"Government of Canada\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Government_of_Canada\">Government of Canada<\/a>\u00a0passed the\u00a0<i>National Gallery Act<\/i>, formally outlining the institution&#8217;s mandate as a national art museum. The Gallery was moved to the\u00a0<a class=\"new\" title=\"Lorne Building (page does not exist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Lorne_Building&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Lorne Building<\/a>\u00a0in 1960.<\/p>\n<p>In 1988, the Gallery was relocated to a new complex designed by Israeli architect\u00a0<a title=\"Moshe Safdie\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moshe_Safdie\">Moshe Safdie<\/a>. The glass and granite building is on\u00a0<a title=\"Sussex Drive\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sussex_Drive\">Sussex Drive<\/a>, with a notable view of Canada&#8217;s Parliament Buildings on\u00a0<a title=\"Parliament Hill\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Parliament_Hill\">Parliament Hill<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-skyscraperpage_4-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Gallery_of_Canada#cite_note-skyscraperpage-4\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>4<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-emporis_5-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Gallery_of_Canada#cite_note-emporis-5\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>5<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-structurae_6-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Gallery_of_Canada#cite_note-structurae-6\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>6<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-gallery.ca_9-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Gallery_of_Canada#cite_note-gallery.ca-9\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>9<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The Gallery&#8217;s permanent collection includes more than 93,000 works by European, American, Asian, Canadian, and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Indigenous peoples of Canada\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indigenous_peoples_of_Canada\">Indigenous<\/a>\u00a0artists.
