They display works from the immense collection amassed by the\u00a0<a title=\"Catholic Church\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Catholic_Church\">Catholic Church<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Papacy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Papacy\">papacy<\/a>\u00a0throughout the centuries, including several of the best-known\u00a0<a title=\"Roman sculpture\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roman_sculpture\">Roman sculptures<\/a>\u00a0and most important masterpieces of\u00a0<a title=\"Renaissance art\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Renaissance_art\">Renaissance art<\/a>\u00a0in the world. The museums contain roughly 70,000 works, of which 20,000 are on display,<sup id=\"cite_ref-collection_2-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vatican_Museums#cite_note-collection-2\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>2<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0and currently employ 640 people who work in 40 different administrative, scholarly, and restoration departments.<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pope_Julius_II\">Pope Julius II<\/a>\u00a0founded the museums in the early 16th century.<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sistine_Chapel_ceiling\">its ceiling<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"The Last Judgement (Michelangelo)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Last_Judgement_(Michelangelo)\">altar wall<\/a>\u00a0decorated by\u00a0<a title=\"Michelangelo\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michelangelo\">Michelangelo<\/a>, and the\u00a0<a title=\"Raphael Rooms\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Raphael_Rooms\">Stanze di Raffaello<\/a>\u00a0(decorated by\u00a0<a title=\"Raphael\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Raphael\">Raphael<\/a>) are on the visitor route through the Vatican Museums,<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vatican_Museums#cite_note-7\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>7<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0considered among the most\u00a0<a title=\"Western canon\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Western_canon\">canonical<\/a>\u00a0and distinctive works of Western and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"European art\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/European_art\">European art<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, the Vatican Museums were visited by 6.8 million people.<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" title=\"List of most-visited museums\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_most-visited_museums\">museums<\/a>\u00a0in the world after the\u00a0<a title=\"Louvre\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louvre\">Louvre<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vatican_Museums#cite_note-9\"><span
