The museum is based in the\u00a0<a title=\"Art Institute of Chicago Building\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Art_Institute_of_Chicago_Building\">Art Institute of Chicago Building<\/a>\u00a0in Chicago&#8217;s Grant Park. Its permanent collection of nearly 300,000 works of art is augmented by more than 30 special exhibitions mounted yearly that illuminate aspects of the collection and present curatorial and scientific research. The land of the institute is publicly owned by the city of Chicago and administered by the\u00a0<a title=\"Chicago Park District\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chicago_Park_District\">Chicago Park District<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As a research institution, the Art Institute also has a conservation and conservation science department, five conservation laboratories, and\u00a0<a title=\"Ryerson and Burnham Libraries\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ryerson_and_Burnham_Libraries\">Ryerson and Burnham Libraries<\/a>, one of the nation&#8217;s largest art history and architecture libraries.<\/p>\n<p>The museum&#8217;s building was constructed for the 1893\u00a0<a title=\"World's Columbian Exposition\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World%27s_Columbian_Exposition\">World&#8217;s Columbian Exposition<\/a>\u00a0and, due to the growth of the collection, several additions have occurred since. The Modern Wing, designed by\u00a0<a title=\"Renzo Piano\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Renzo_Piano\">Renzo Piano<\/a>, is the most recent expansion, and when it opened in 2009 it increased the museum&#8217;s footprint to nearly one million square feet.
