At 560,000 square feet (52,000\u00a0m<sup>2<\/sup>), the museum is New York City&#8217;s second largest and contains an art collection with around 500,000 objects.<sup id=\"cite_ref-nyt-2021-11-222_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brooklyn_Museum#cite_note-nyt-2021-11-222-2\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>2<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Located near the\u00a0<a title=\"Prospect Heights, Brooklyn\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prospect_Heights,_Brooklyn\">Prospect Heights<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Crown Heights, Brooklyn\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crown_Heights,_Brooklyn\">Crown Heights<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Flatbush, Brooklyn\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Flatbush,_Brooklyn\">Flatbush<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"Park Slope\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Park_Slope\">Park Slope<\/a>\u00a0neighborhoods of Brooklyn, the museum&#8217;s\u00a0<a title=\"Beaux-Arts architecture\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beaux-Arts_architecture\">Beaux-Arts<\/a>\u00a0building was designed by\u00a0<a title=\"McKim, Mead &amp; White\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/McKim,_Mead_%26_White\">McKim, Mead &amp; White<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Brooklyn Museum was founded in 1823 as the\u00a0<a title=\"Brooklyn Apprentices' Library\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brooklyn_Apprentices%27_Library\">Brooklyn Apprentices&#8217; Library<\/a>\u00a0and merged with the\u00a0<b>Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences<\/b>\u00a0in 1843. The museum was conceived as an institution focused on a broad public.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Lawrence_1987_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brooklyn_Museum#cite_note-Lawrence_1987-3\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>3<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The Brooklyn Museum&#8217;s current building dates to 1897 and has been expanded several times since then. The museum initially struggled to maintain its building and collection, but it was revitalized in the late 20th century following major renovations.<\/p>\n<p>Significant areas of the collection include antiquities, specifically their collection of\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Egyptian antiquities\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Egyptian_antiquities\">Egyptian antiquities<\/a>\u00a0spanning over 3,000 years.\u00a0<a title=\"Art of Europe\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Art_of_Europe\">European<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"African art\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/African_art\">African<\/a>,\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Oceanic art\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oceanic_art\">Oceanic<\/a>, and\u00a0<a title=\"Japanese art\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Japanese_art\">Japanese art<\/a>\u00a0make for notable antiquities collections as well.\u00a0<a title=\"Visual art of the United States\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Visual_art_of_the_United_States\">American art<\/a>\u00a0is heavily represented, starting at the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"American colonial period\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_colonial_period\">Colonial<\/a>\u00a0period.
