Considerado uno de los recintos m\u00e1s importantes del pa\u00eds, ha recibido con brazos abiertos las propuestas m\u00e1s interesantes de teatro y danza del Festival Internacional Cervantino. El edificio de estilo neocl\u00e1sico fue el primero en la ciudad de Guanajuato en abrir sus puertas a las artes esc\u00e9nicas en el siglo XVIII, cuando se le conoc\u00eda como \u201cCorral de Comedias\u201d. El movimiento de Independencia motiv\u00f3 su parcial abandono, por lo que este fue nuevamente inaugurado en 1826. En este tiempo el teatro funcion\u00f3 como un cine comercial hasta que en 1921 fue lamentablemente consumido por las llamas. Treinta a\u00f1os m\u00e1s tarde se dio inicio a la construcci\u00f3n del Teatro Principal que qued\u00f3 destinado a servir a los guanajuatenses como sala de conferencias, ceremonias escolares y actividades c\u00edvicas.
