The department began as a subset of the sculpture department, based on royal property and the transfer of work from the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Basilique Saint-Denis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Basilique_Saint-Denis\">Basilique Saint-Denis<\/a>, the burial ground of French monarchs that held the\u00a0<i>Coronation Sword of the Kings of France<\/i>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Nave_130_121-0\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louvre#cite_note-Nave_130-121\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>120<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-Mignot_24-24\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louvre#cite_note-Mignot-24\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>23<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><sup class=\"reference nowrap\"><span title=\"Page: 451-454\">:\u200a451-454\u200a<\/span><\/sup>\u00a0Among the budding collection&#8217;s most prized works were\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Pietre dure\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pietre_dure\">pietre dure<\/a>\u00a0vases and bronzes. The Durand collection&#8217;s 1825 acquisition added &#8220;ceramics, enamels, and stained glass&#8221;, and 800\u00a0pieces were given by Pierre R\u00e9voil. The onset of\u00a0<a title=\"Romanticism\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Romanticism\">Romanticism<\/a>\u00a0rekindled interest in\u00a0<a title=\"Renaissance\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Renaissance\">Renaissance<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Medieval\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Medieval\">Medieval<\/a>\u00a0artwork, and the Sauvageot donation expanded the department with 1,500\u00a0middle-age and\u00a0<a title=\"Faience\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Faience\">fa\u00efence<\/a>\u00a0works. In 1862, the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Campana collection\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Campana_collection\">Campana collection<\/a>\u00a0added gold jewellery and maiolicas, mainly from the 15th\u00a0and\u00a016th\u00a0centuries.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Mignot_24-25\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louvre#cite_note-Mignot-24\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>23<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><sup class=\"reference nowrap\"><span title=\"Page: 451-454\">:\u200a451-454\u200a<\/span><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-122\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louvre#cite_note-122\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>121<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The works are displayed on the Richelieu Wing&#8217;s first floor and in the Apollo Gallery, named by the painter Charles Le Brun, who was commissioned by Louis\u00a0XIV (the Sun King) to decorate the space in a solar theme. The medieval collection contains the coronation crown of Louis\u00a0XV,\u00a0<a title=\"Charles V of France\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_V_of_France\">Charles\u00a0V&#8217;s<\/a>\u00a0sceptre, and the 12th\u00a0century\u00a0<i>porphyry vase<\/i>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-123\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louvre#cite_note-123\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>122<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0The Renaissance art holdings include\u00a0<a title=\"Giambologna\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Giambologna\">Giambologna<\/a>&#8216;s bronze\u00a0<i>Nessus and Deianira<\/i>\u00a0and the tapestry\u00a0<i>Maximillian&#8217;s Hunt<\/i>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Nave_130_121-1\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louvre#cite_note-Nave_130-121\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>120<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup>\u00a0From later periods, highlights include\u00a0<a title=\"Madame de Pompadour\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Madame_de_Pompadour\">Madame de Pompadour<\/a>&#8216;s\u00a0<a title=\"S\u00e8vres\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/S%C3%A8vres\">S\u00e8vres<\/a>\u00a0vase collection and\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Napoleon III of France\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Napoleon_III_of_France\">Napoleon\u00a0III<\/a>&#8216;s apartments.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Nave_130_121-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louvre#cite_note-Nave_130-121\"><span class=\"cite-bracket\">[<\/span>120<span class=\"cite-bracket\">]<\/span><\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>In September 2000, the Louvre Museum dedicated the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Gilbert R. Chagoury\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gilbert_R._Chagoury\">Gilbert Chagoury<\/a>\u00a0and Rose-Marie Chagoury Gallery to display tapestries donated by the Chagourys, including a 16th-century six-part tapestry suite, sewn with gold and silver threads representing sea divinities, which was commissioned in Paris for\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Jean-Baptiste Colbert, Marquis de Seignelay\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jean-Baptiste_Colbert,_Marquis_de_Seignelay\">Colbert de Seignelay<\/a>, Secretary of State for the Navy.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0Objets d&#8217;art\u00a0collection spans the time from the Middle Ages to the mid-19th\u00a0century.
