Organized in conjunction with\u00a0Gainsborough: The Fashion of Portraiture<\/em><\/a>, this Cabinet installation presents twenty-four hand-colored engravings that depict French fashion in the late eighteenth century. These engravings, known as fashion plates, are selected from\u00a0Gallerie des modes et costumes fran\u00e7ais<\/em>\u00a0(1778\u201387), the largest and most influential series of such plates at the time. Featuring over four hundred images created by talented designers and engravers in Paris,\u00a0Gallerie des modes<\/em>\u00a0inspired many competitors and counterfeits across Europe. Its success anticipated the arrival of true fashion magazines, such as\u00a0Cabinet des modes<\/em>\u00a0(1785\u201393). Catering to an increasingly fashion-conscious public,\u00a0Gallerie des modes<\/em>\u00a0shows a wide range of poufs, headwear, jewelry and ensembles worn by French people from various walks of life. Touted as \u201cd\u2019apr\u00e8s nature\u201d (drawn from life), these images were presented as accurate representations of the diverse fashions that flourished under the reign of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. No complete set of\u00a0Gallerie des modes\u00a0<\/em>survives today. Many were discarded when fashions changed, and others could have been destroyed during the French Revolution due to their association with the decadence of the ancien r\u00e9gime. The\u00a0Frick Art Research Library<\/a>\u00a0has an impressive\u00a0collection of three hundred and seventy original prints<\/a>, a selection of which are on view at the Frick for the first time.<\/p>\n
