Un tiempo de libertad en que el mundo hab\u00eda sido posible<\/em>\u00a0es una videoinstalaci\u00f3n comisionada por Museo Jumex y el Museo de Arte de Zapopan (MAZ) de la artista inglesa-mexicana Melanie Smith, cuyo t\u00edtulo proviene de una frase del cuento \u201cAxolotl\u201d, del escritor Julio Cort\u00e1zar, para presentar su propia lectura y acercamiento a estos anfibios. La artista, frente a la interrogante de la pintura y la representaci\u00f3n, estudi\u00f3 a los ajolotes en una investigaci\u00f3n con la bi\u00f3loga Eria Rebollar y la curadora Helena Ch\u00e1vez Mac Gregor, intentando vislumbrar qu\u00e9 imagen de ellos se puede producir hoy.<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Los ajolotes fueron representados en c\u00f3dices desde tiempos mesoamericanos, y fueron investigados, entre otros, pero de manera muy importante, por el pintor Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Velasco. Aparecen tambi\u00e9n en el C\u00e1rcamo de Dolores, mural de ingenier\u00eda hidr\u00e1ulica de Diego Rivera, y fueron la obsesi\u00f3n del artista surrealista Wolfgang Paalen. En estas im\u00e1genes los ajolotes aparecen como deidad, objeto de investigaci\u00f3n naturalista, s\u00edmbolo o alegor\u00eda. En la actualidad, al tiempo que se extinguen de su h\u00e1bitat natural, la imagen del ajolote se propaga exponencialmente en billetes, mu\u00f1ecos, playeras, llaveros y propaganda, como mercanc\u00eda cultural e imaginario de la identidad de la Ciudad de M\u00e9xico.<\/p>\n

A Smith le intrigan los ajolotes como superficie. Como campo de negociaci\u00f3n desde las membranas, entre lo interno y lo externo, entre diferentes escalas, en tanto pantalla de proyecci\u00f3n y su inevitable escamoteo de cualquier identidad. Con esta muestra, Smith propone una animaci\u00f3n que especula sobre un mundo donde los ajolotes flotan m\u00e1s all\u00e1 de peceras y sus cuerpos de agua, mientras que, por otro lado, el espectador \u2014en una especie de cuarto de control, como aquellos que miran hacia el espacio exterior\u2014 contempla una serie de registros visuales sin saber si los anfibios est\u00e1n adentro o afuera, si son parte de este mundo, si es algo remoto o por venir. Smith invita as\u00ed a imaginar un tiempo de libertad en que el mundo hab\u00eda sido posible.<\/p>\n
